I don't think auditioning for another job that will begin only after your current contract ends violates your contract, unless the contract expressly forbids making a pilot; and we don't know what his contract says or doesn't say.

Since none of us has a clue what his contract says, you are leaping to conclusions when you say he violated his contract.
