My friend's mother took care of her ailing live-in boyfriend for the last few years of his life until he succumbed to cancer last year. I'm not trying to diminish what happened to these two men in the op's post but just wanted to point out that legal marriage offers protections like nothing else, no matter how careful the couple is or how many ways they try to make sure all possible legal documents are in place.
