SENATE FUNDING BILL INCLUDES $8 BILLION IN NEW NUCLEAR LOANS

VOTE LIKELY THIS WEEK; TELL THE SENATE NO MORE TAXPAYER BAILOUTS FOR NUCLEAR POWER!

December 15, 2010

Dear Friends,

Here is a brief update on last-ditch efforts by nuclear power interests to get their hands on more taxpayer money this year:

As we reported last week, the House passed a Continuing Resolution to keep funding the government that included $7 Billion in new taxpayer loans for nuclear reactor construction. The Senate is following a different approach, called an Omnibus funding bill, that would provide $8 Billion in nuclear loans. The Senate is expected to vote on the Omnibus bill later this week.

Please tell your Senators now to strip this bill of its nuclear funding, or vote against the bill entirely. We have updated our action page and letter to the Senate to take this new development into account.

Everyone in Washington claims to be concerned about the federal deficit, yet too many can't seem to stop their spending on nuclear power. Let's all raise our voices and make clear taxpayers don't want to risk our money on new nuclear reactors.

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to our Holiday fundraising drive. If you haven't yet contributed, I hope you will do so now here, or after you send your letter (and make a call to your Senators too!). I also hope you will consider becoming a monthly donor. A contribution of just $5 or $10/month really adds up for NIRS while being much easier on your wallets too. We rely on your support to do this work and pay our bills; so please donate as generously as you can this holiday season.

Thank you for all you do,

Michael Mariotte
