I think it is also worth noting (regarding #7... George Washington as military commander)...

Franklin was sent to France repeatedly to elicit their help in defeating their arch enemy the British. But the King of France kept refusing until the Colonial Army won at least ONE battle against the British, proving that the Brits could be defeated and the Colonists proved how dedicated they were to winning.

The famous painting of Washington crossing the Deleware, was a sneak attack on Christmas Eve on the British camp in Trenton, NJ. The Redcoats apparently thought "No one would ever attack on Christmas Eve".
