remember when the mayor of Nyack NY tried to copy New Paltz and start marrying gays a few weeks back? . . . well, apparently that slimeball Fred Phelps and his gang of thugs heard about it and are planning to do some demonstrating there this weekend . . . Nyack is about ten miles from me, so I think I may head down and join the counter-demonstrators on Sunday . . . if you're anywhere in the New York metropolitan area, think about joining us and letting Phelps know what we think of him

Nyack to be scene of protests Sunday–Monday
Pro and anti gay rights demonstrations planned

Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to gather in Nyack this weekend for a series of protests both opposed to and in support of a variety of gay rights issues.

The demonstrations, which both sides say should be peaceful, will nevertheless be under the watchful eye of local police, who have been advised of the events and plan to have a presence at the Sunday evening and Monday morning gatherings.

The two events have both been triggered by the announced arrival of right-wing religious leader Rev. Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, who has devoted his Baptist ministry to condemning homosexuality throughout the United States. Phelps says he selected Nyack as a focus of his current nationwide tour because he views the riverfront village as “the satanic axis of sodomites,” which must be purged of its gay supportive tendencies.

The particular targets of the minister’s wrath are Nyack Mayor John Shields, who recently applied for a marriage permit to wed his partner Robert Streams; and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, which last year voted to become a reconciling congregation, fully accepting of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members at all levels.
