Amid Defections, Poland Vows To Keep Forces In Iraq

Excerpt:

WARSAW, Poland -- Amid defections by other coalition partners, leaders in Poland say Polish forces will remain in Iraq, despite earlier comments from the outgoing prime minister that hinted otherwise.

A Polish government spokesman told The Associated Press that Poland isn't considering a troop pullout from Iraq -- and will stay until the country is "stabilized."

Earlier, a Polish news agency quoted outgoing Prime Minister Leszek Miller as saying that Spain's decision to withdraw troops couldn't be ignored.

The comment suggested that Poland may have been having doubts about leading the peacekeeping mission in south-central Iraq amid a sharp rise in coalition casualties in April.
