Sometime last year the NYTimes "letters editor" wrote a piece describing how they select what to print. They carefully select the best they can find and also try to represent the balance of the views being expressed- for example, if an issue is closely debated from two opposing sides they will publish an equal number from both opposing views. While if an issue has a preponderance of opinion on one side, then they will weight the number of letters expressing that view to accurately reflect that fact.

I try and read their letters every day. It is IMHO the most intelligent and informed source of news and commentary today. The views expressed are always poignant and credible.
