What we are experiencing now is the consequence of empire-building--an enterprise pursued by liberal and rightist alike. Few here would be willing to admit it, but Cold War liberals like Truman and Acheson were as culpable in the forging of our dreaded national security state as, say, Eisenhower and Dulles. The radical left (Henry A. Wallace, for example) and the Old Right (Senator Robert Taft) saw these maniacs coming, for the seeds of totalitarianism had already been planted in their time.
