Rumsfeld was chairman of the board of directors of Gilead Sciences, Inc. He also served as a member of the boards of directors of ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) Ltd., Tribune Company and RAND Corporation. He was chairman of the Salomon Smith Barney International Advisory Board. From 1991 to 1996, Rumsfeld served as a member of the board of directors of Amylin Pharmaceuticals. Rumsfeld was chairman and chief executive officer of General Instrument Corporation from October 1990 to August 1993 and served as a senior advisor to William Blair & Co., an investment banking firm, from 1985 to 1990. He was chief executive officer of G.D. Searle & Co. from 1977 to 1985.
