kids tend to be passionate about things. Be it the object of their attraction(lust), music, sports, whathaveyou. This can sometimes lead them to be a little myoptic and very black and white in their thinking and decision-making. If they follow this model, they get drawn to the more extreme choices in their lives. Ergo the CCC vs conventional Christianity. Once you're in there, cult mentality can take hold or simple intolerance. Ergo the poster incident.

Hopefully the school gets them to realize that grey exists at some point. This is pretty hit and miss. They do eventually get it and develope a multifaceted mind and get on with life.
