How does voting for the bankrupcy bill and CAFTA make one a centrist?

I can see some point to the DLC being centrist. Clearly opposing things like same sex marriage is currently a centrist position. That doesn't mean I have to like that position but I must admit it is popular for now. But how are these centrist positions? Where is the big outcry from voters for bankrupcy reform and CAFTA? Am I that clueless about what people really care about?
