12. For those of you who might not have been following the story,
here's the MSM progression of reporting, from one local station. There's apparently a lot more info available "out there," just not on most of the TV stations.

October 1: explosion reported; story is "A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast."

Explosive Device Kills One At University Of Oklahoma

POSTED: 9:28 pm CDT October 1, 2005
UPDATED: 9:57 pm CDT October 1, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- One person was killed in an explosion in a traffic circle about 100 yards from a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night.

Authorities were calling the death a suicide.

The loud noise of the explosion could be heard inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where 84,000 people were watching the Oklahoma Sooners play Kansas State.

A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast. The area near the stadium was searched by bomb dogs.

October 2: "Father says no political motivation." This is the same day that "bomb squad members performed controlled explosions of items connected to the case" at Hinrich's apartment.

POSTED: 5:15 pm CDT October 2, 2005
UPDATED: 8:25 pm CDT October 4, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- A University of Oklahoma student who died when an explosive device he was carrying detonated near a packed football stadium wasn't politically motivated, his father said Monday.

--snip--

Hinrichs' father, Joel Hinrichs, Jr., said he's confident his son didn't intend to harm anyone and wasn't motivated by a political agenda.

--snip--

Hinrichs said his son did not leave a suicide note and that FBI agents told him hydrogen peroxide was used to construct the bomb. On Sunday, FBI investigators searched the younger Hinrichs' Norman apartment and his family home in Colorado Springs, Colo.

--snip--

Donald Hamilton, interim director of the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism in Oklahoma City, said it appears Saturday's incident was not an act of terrorism. "Scholars of terrorism immediately and categorically exclude irrational acts from their definition of terrorism," Hamilton said. "Terrorists have purpose. They have motive. It's just as simple as that ... and if that is not present, it's not terrorism."

October 4: "Hinrichs Tried to Buy Ammonium Nitrate."

POSTED: 5:16 pm CDT October 4, 2005
UPDATED: 10:03 am CDT October 5, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- The general manager of a Norman feed store said Tuesday that Joel Henry Hinrichs III had inquired about purchasing ammonium nitrate fertilizer, the primary ingredient used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Dustin Ellison, the general manager of Ellison Feed & Seed on Porter Avenue, said that a man matching Hinrichs' description had come into the store days before he blew himself up on OU's campus. Ellison said the man asked about ammonium nitrate, but couldn't offer a reason why he needed it.

According to an AP report, Ellison said that Hinrichs acted strangely and was wearing a vest with what appeared to be wires in it when he asked for ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

--snip--

To this point, authorities still suggest Hinrichs' only motive for blowing himself up was suicide. The FBI released a statement Tuesday evening saying that "there is no known link between Hinrichs and any terrorist or extremist organization(s) or activities."

October 4: "Sources Identify TATP as Component of Bomb: TATP Same Component Used by Infamous Shoe Bomber."

POSTED: 9:56 pm CDT October 4, 2005
UPDATED: 10:11 pm CDT October 4, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sources confirmed Tuesday night that at least one of the components in the bomb used by Joel Henry Hinrichs III Saturday night was a product called TATP.

Technically, TATP is triacetone triperoxide. However, it's called the 'Mother of Satan' by Islamist extremists. Experts say it is made by mixing common household items such as drain cleaner and bleach to create a white powder with a strong smell. It's so volatile that it can explode even if it's merely dropped. It can even explode spontaneously, experts say.

There have been very few reports of TATP being used in the United States; however, there have been more documented cases overseas -- including Richard Reid, who was arrested after he used TATP in his shoe and tried to light it on a flight.

The FBI is testing materials from the OU student's backpack, and from Hinrichs' apartment. Sources said a chemist from FBI headquarters was flown to Oklahoma to help with the gathering of evidence to be used for testing.

October 5: "Bomber's Roommate Held Briefly After Attack." Oh, and David Boren, the university president, is insisting that Hinrichs acted alone and did not try to get into the stadium. (this is in the article too.)

POSTED: 10:39 am CDT October 5, 2005
UPDATED: 2:23 pm CDT October 5, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Pakistani roommate of a man authorities said died when he detonated an explosive device outside a crowded football stadium was led in handcuffs from a party shortly after Saturday's explosion, the head of an Islamic student group said.

--snip--

Cheema and three other Muslim students were led in handcuffs from a party by police after the blast, Ashraf Hussein, president of the Muslim Student Association, said Tuesday. They later were released.

--snip--

The FBI said in a statement Tuesday that there is no current threat posed by additional explosive materials, that there is no known threat from anyone else related to the incident and that there is no known link between Hinrichs and any terrorist or extremist organization or activities.

--snip--

Hinrichs' father said the FBI told him the bomb his son had was made of hydrogen peroxide. He said the FBI told him more high-density hydrogen peroxide was found in the apartment.

October 5: "Student Leader: Hinrichs Not Muslim"

POSTED: 7:28 pm CDT October 5, 2005
UPDATED: 7:43 pm CDT October 5, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- The president of an OU student organization said he believes Joel Henry Hinrichs III was neither a Muslim nor a visitor to local mosques.

Ashraf Hussein, the president of OU's Muslim Student Association, also confirmed that up to seven people were either questioned or detained regarding the bombing death of Hinrichs, a 21-year-old engineering student.

--snip--

While the incident and its investigation have spurred plenty of rumor and speculation, authorities have consistently maintained that there is no evidence Hinrichs belonged to an extremist organization.

On Tuesday, the owner of a Norman feed store acknowledged that Hinrichs came into Ellison Feed & Seed last week to inquire about ammonium nitrate fertilizer, which was an ingredient in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. However, Dustin Ellison said Hinrichs wasn't able to explain what he might want with the ammonium nitrate.

October 6: "Norman Police: Officer Went "Above And Beyond."

NOTE: The officer did not file this report until MONDAY, two days after the bombing, and at least four days after the incident at the feed store.

POSTED: 10:05 am CDT October 6, 2005
UPDATED: 7:15 pm CDT October 6, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- Norman police confirmed Thursday that they ran a routine investigation of a 21-year-old University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up on campus Saturday night.

--snip--

The officer, according to Younger, took a mental note of the conversation and its context, and then followed Hinrichs outside. The officer took down the student's license tag number, contacted Norman's police department dispatch operation, had Hinrichs checked for outstanding warrants -- but, alas, found nothing.

The officer continued his investigation Thursday night, but could only conclude that Hinrichs was an OU student and lived in university-subsidized housing. The officer did contact a Norman bomb squad technician; however, the plan at that time was for the off-duty officer to complete a written report for submission the following Monday.

--snip--

When asked whether or not the officer could have done something to prevent the explosion, Younger said the off-duty officer actually went "above and beyond" the call of duty to act as he did.

"I think we're fortunate to have an employee go that far," Younger said. "We don't know what would have happened if the officer hadn't been there."
