... at least they did in my materialistic, Republican teenage neighborhood.

I was out of the loop because I wore outdated LA Gear instead of Nike, did my shopping at 99-cent stores instead of the mall, and drove an old manual-everything Toyota Corolla instead of a spanking new Honda Civic or a BMW.

Parents strongly encouraged that kind of behavior, as if teens were not cruel enough on their own. My greatest sin was having parents who were not wealthy enough to afford my classmates' extravagant lifestyle, complete with million-dollar mansions.

(And guess what? My father, poor as he was, still supported this whole damn setup by being a neocon Republican himself.)
