Woodward and Bernstein had erred in attributing some information Sloane gave them regarding Haldeman's role. They thought he said it came out in grand jury testimony, and it is possible that Sloane had implied that. But after the article was published, the White House focused on the smaller error, rather than the larger truth.

Thus, Felt also said, "If you shoot too high and miss, then everyone feels more secure. Lawyers work this way. I'm sure smart reporters must, too. You put the investigation back months. It puts everyone on the defensive -- editors, FBI agents, everybody has to go into a crouch after this."
