Hanging chads no more?
By ERIC BONTRAGER Colorado Daily Staff

Fearing a local version of Florida's election debacle during the 2000 presidential race, and in compliance with the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), Boulder County will hold a voting systems fair this Saturday to demonstrate four voting machines that are being considered to replace Boulder's 28-year-old punch card system.

The fair, to be held from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Houston Room at the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's offices located at 1750 33rd St. in Boulder, will allow the public to try voting on these systems and evaluate their effectiveness. The fair is free and open to the public.

Four companies, Diebold Election Systems, Sequoia Voting Systems, Avante International Technology and Hard Intercivic will demonstrate their systems for selection by Boulder County officials.

Most of the systems, called Direct Recording Electronic (DRE), are described as an ATM-style touch screen system, while another system uses a "wheel" system in which the voter turns to their selection and then presses a button to record their vote.
