27. Thank you for posting that, I've never read it before.
One of my earliest musical memories is listening to the voice of
Paul Robeson when I was about four years old. I loved it, and would
ask my mother over and over to play "more Paul Robeson". Nobody can
sing "Old Man River" like him, nobody. Or "Deep River" either. But
then he could sing something romantic like "Drink To Me Only" and
make that his own too.

He was very much liked and respected in Australia, and I remember
him singing for the workers on the Opera House when work had just
begun on it. He was an idol of the trade union movement, of course,
and the trade union song "Joe Hill" is also always associated with
him.

He was a truly great man, and what happened to him was disgraceful.
