..in 1961 broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season, but since Ruth took only 154 games to hit 60, Maris' 61 in 162 games seemed to many traditionalists to be tainted. Ford Frick, the then commissioner, had Maris' record listed with an asterisk.

Since then, it's shorthand for an achievement tainted by considerations of the cirumstances under which it was achieved.
