Actually, you don't need a car in Manhattan. If I lived there I would find a car more of a nuisance . Alternate days/times to park/not to park. Then you have to deal with the astronomical parking fees, not to mention gas. I enjoy walking in Manhattan because it is so much fun to watch the people in NY and just eat along the way.
