25. We should start a club
When things really went to pieces not long ago, I realized that - as practiced as I thought I was in picking up fib signals - I was nowhere near equal to the task that faced me. I still can't beleive some of the lies that she told me, things that I now know were lies but that at the time seemed perfectly innocuous. And I, of course, second-guessed my own instincts as a result, dragging the whole thing out longer and longer before the big 'duh' sign appeared above my head. And the weird thing is that there were some elements within this fabric of prevarication that I actually did pick as lies, though not lies that led to the central issue - she must have planted them as red herrings. That is skilled lying.

Very disturbing, though, to me, because I began to question the truth of every moment of every day of every year with her. And I'll never know the truth of it. Even when she broke down and allegedly bared it all I couldn't trust her....very disturbing.

I won't generalize and say that women lie more than men or vice-versa, but it would make a certain sense to me if it's ever determined (like we could ever do that) that women lie more effectively and more convincingly than men. Men, after all, have forever had available the socially-acceptable option of resorting to brute force and aggression when words no longer work. Women haven't traditionally had much in the way of that route and many I know often pride themselves on being more diplomatic than their rather crude male counterparts. And what's a key ingredient in diplomacy, when you strip it right down? Lying.
