Finger of suspicion falls on woman
By Tim Reid
A complaining restaurant customer has been accused of making up a bizarre money-making story

A WOMAN who claimed to have bitten into a severed finger lurking in a bowl of chilli at a Wendy’s fast-food restaurant was arrested and charged with grand larceny and attempted grand larceny yesterday amid suspicions that she lied to make money.

In the latest twist to a case that has left much of America feeling distinctly queasy and the giant Wendy’s food chain with a public relations nightmare, Anna Ayala was arrested at her home in Las Vegas after both police and the fast-food company found no credible link between the finger and the restaurant.

Ms Ayala went on ABC’s Good Morning America on March 22 to claim that while eating a bowl of Wendy’s chilli in San Jose, California, on March 22, she bit into a 1½-inch fingertip, apparently a woman’s, complete with a “well manicured” nail.

As a result, she was suffering from sleeping and eating disorders, she said.
