His 61* home runs were always followed in the record books by an asterisk, because, while he hit more home runs in a year than Babe Ruth, the number of games was greater. Thus his record was considered dubious by some baseball fans. You also see an asterisk next to the titles of some books in the bestseller lists, as that indicates books driven onto the bestseller list by bulk purchases (such as all the right-wing screeds put out by the likes of Regnery Press) - again, a dubious record. It indicates the spurious nature of his "election."
