16. Yup, Tex Schram was a marketing genius.
It also stuck because the Cowboys were one of the teams who took the deal to play on big holiday gamedays... I think part of that deal was they got more MNF spots... so all those little towns with no teams started to take a liking to the 'boys because we had a couple veterans on the team and Tex marketed the hell out of the Mom & apple pie image.

Also, everyone who loves to hate on them makes them "America's Team"... it's publicity... and negative or positive, it works to further promote the 'boys image as one of the most popular teams to love or hate.
