That's your standard modem, and it's installed and is apparently what you're using right now to connect to a traditional dialup Internet provider through a phone line.

Broadband service works differently. With a cable company, it runs through the cable, not the phone line. In the traditional setup, you will get a new piece of a equipment called a cable modem, and you'll connect a coax cable (same thing that goes into your television) to the cable modem and then connect that to your computer through a USB port or Ethernet port. Since you don't have an ethernet port, you'll need to use the USB port. The cable modem is usually a little box with lights on the front...the one I have looks like this:



However, in your original post, you mentioned something about a box with your ULD phone service. In *some* cable setups, they utilize what's called VOIP technology for the phone, and in some of those, the IVP (Internal Voice Port) they use for your phone service also doubles as a cable modem. Is that what you're trying to connect for the broadband service?
