If you save it as a Word doc with MS Word 2000, it will be compatable with any subsequent version of MS Word (including Word XP, Word 2002, etc.). Word2k is also compatable with Word97 and Word95, too.

Rich-Text Format (.rtf) is more compatable, but limits you somewhat in your formatting choices. If you don't need fancy formatting, save it as an RTF file from Word, and you'll be fine.

The most compatable format would be plain text (.txt), but you are severely restricted in your format/styling choices.

Word is fairly universal as a format these days, and you can download free readers for it from MS's website if you don't have it installed on your system.

However, if you REALLY want to get technical/cross-compatable, you could do it in XML. But I won't go there ;)
