2 brands of vaccine are recombinant proteins of surface antigen but you tested positive for antibodies to core antigen. You could have your doctor test you again since false positives can occur with any assay (I don't know if they test samples in duplicate or retest positive samples) but that probably won't fix your donation status. There also might be other companies who manufacture kits and some may be considered more accurate by medical professionals, I've just used one brand for primates. Also when I donate they ask a question about having recently received Hep B immune globulin which is given after potential exposure so if that occurred maybe that would cause a positive test? I don't know which antibodies are in the immune globulin given for that.

I am not a doctor but if your letter says that anti core antibodies are in response to infection you should ask your doctor about it.
