you should prevent him from experiencing any further suffering. I've had 8 cats in my life so far and I've been through this several times. It's unbelievably painful and there is no way to make it not painful for you. The only thing that can be good is to eliminate any further pain or suffering for the cat. It's a hard decision to make, and it won't feel right even when you logically know it's the right thing to do - it still won't feel right. Do what is best for the cat. He's very lucky to have you for his owner, who loves him so much. And he knows you love him. I'm sorry that you are going through this, it's horrible to go through - but it's a symptom of how much you love him, so it's a sign of something good.
