2. Gotta put Platoon as my second
Totally agree on Full Metal Jacket. In discussing some of these movies with vets, Deer Hunter didn't cover the preparation for "killing the enemy" that was such a part of the experience. NO ONE showed up over there unprepared to kill. Kubrick nailed the boot camp cold.

Some of my favs--

Casualties of War (dePalma) was much better than having Micheal J. Fox in it would have you believe.

Saw Apocalypse Now on opening day and it blew me away for some time.

84 Charlie MoPic was one of those magic "blair witch' type projects, cliched as hell but it got under my skin and I can't get rid of it (when Donovans 'To Susan on the West Coast Waiting' begins just hang it up, no dry eyes)

The Odd Angry Shot (aussies)
Go Tell the Spartans (early 60's)
Coming Home and Born on the Fourth of July rocked,
Birdie was a deep brain mash, thoughtful and scary
MASH may as well have been in Vietnam, even though Altman couldn't get funding unless he camouflaged it as Korea
Streamers was an Altman filmed play that took place in DC but it was all about Vietnam
Gardens of Stone (Caan, Huston, nice portrait of sorrow)

Yeah, Deer Hunter was crazed. I am still waiting to see Heaven's Gate, the Cimino project funded with Deer Hunter goodwill. Very few people have even seen it, I have read that it is the most beautifully filmed picture ever made.

There are many I missed, and I've yet to see Rescue Dawn

I watched Frontline for Veterans Day, and made sure the vets I work with had the Applebees store list for the free entree
