My dog is far more protective than I realized

This morning around 5 am I noticed that Haydes wasn't sleeping next to me on the bed like he normally does (sorry ladies, we're a package). I freaked out a little so I went wandering around my house and found him sleeping on the couch in the dark. I must have been quite stealthy - he didn't realize I was in the room. As I started to turn to go back to bed, Haydes woke up, and not realizing it was me, began a low growl as he stood up in an offensive posture. He was going to attack. I quickly identified myself and he came frolicking over to me as if nothing happened.

I'm not worried about him ever turning on me. I have him well trained despite his spazzy nature. He knows 25 commands and we can read each other like books. But still... I kept thinking about a 90 lb German Shepherd lunging at some idiot trying to break into my house. Best home security system money can buy, I suppose. You can't get that kind of mileage out of a cat or bird, that's for sure.
