11. I love my Nook and there are also many free books offered for it.
If you have a Twitter account subscribe to Inkmesh.com for notification of free ebooks on all 3 devices.

It really depends on which features you want in an e-reader to determine which is best for you. I won't even say Nook is best because I don't own a Kindle or Sony and I wouldn't trust anyone saying theirs is best unless they also own the device they are comparing it to.

With Nook you can borrow from public libraries - Kindle you can't. But that may not matter to you. I personally haven't borrowed any books from the library so it wouldn't be a deciding factor for me.

From what I understand Kindle's notes and highlighting are better than Nook's, again something I don't care about.

I prefer the touch pad on the Nook to Kindle's keyboard.

The NookColor is LCD so it is backlit, better for reading at night without a light but not good for reading in direct sunlight. I read outside a lot so I prefer the e-ink vs lcd.

My Nook was a gift but I would have chosen it anyways because I didn't want to limit myself to the Kindle's proprietary book format. At the time I got my Nook there was sometimes a better price for books on Amazon than B&N or elsewhere. Once the publishers changed the pricing strategy in April (thanks iPad), booksellers had less room to adjust price on ebooks so there is very little price difference between booksellers for books published by the majority of the major booksellers.

good luck with you choice :-)
