Associated Press

FORT MYERS - State Rep. Connie Mack IV resigned Thursday to run for the congressional seat once held by his father.

Mack, 36, announced this week that he would move from Broward County to his hometown district that includes Lee County and parts of Collier and Charlotte counties.

Republican Porter Goss, who was elected to the congressional seat in 1988 after Mack's father moved to the U.S. Senate, is retiring when his term ends next fall.

Mack, a marketing executive and Republican, was first elected to his state House seat based in Fort Lauderdale in 2000.
