1) A finite earth can support only a limited number of humans

2) A population that has grown larger than the carrying capacity of its environment degrades its environment.

3) Most serious environmental problems are the result of our consumption of resources.

4) A population can only temporarily overshoot its carrying capacity.

5) Population overshoot by degrading the environment erodes its carrying capacity leading to that habitat in future being unable to support so many people in future.

6) Oil, coal and other nonrenewable resources have allowed us to exceed the earth's carrying capacity for our species. Unless alternatives are found the number of humans will be reduced.

The link provides a more in depth discussion.
