1. Well, for one thing
an unstable Iraq gives the U.S. and excuse to set up permanent military bases there for strategic and tactical reasons. Bases in Iraq become an anchor for their bid to reform and modernize the whole region. Big problem is the ideologues are so narrow-minded and culturally unaware they didn't realize that a controlled chaos in Iraq was a dubious idea at best. The "Wolfpack" were presumptious to think they could harness a small uprising for their benefit. They are lucky it hasn't been worse, in all honesty. Unfortunately, it will.
