When you return, remain civil. Point out that you have learned about the incident, and assure her that you would never condone such an act, and ask her not to judge, just as you would not judge her (because she works for a republican) for the statements of those at a conservative convention last week including the view that federal judges shouldn't just be impeached, but should be impaled. Point being - there are folks who are very extreme - and the rest of us should not be judged by their actions (now you have an "us" and "them" thing going with her and you as the us). Remind her that the great thing about democracy is the ability for folks to dialogue, civilly. And that some of our best moments in history, things like the forming of the constitution, came from dialogue between folks who did not always agree.
