I believe that many times with democrats switch to the dark side it is because they have
1) alienated democratic voters and can't win
or
2) just can't win because they are a crappy candidate
or
3) a better candidate comes along who will unseat them in a primary.

The same thing happened with Walter B. Jone, jr. in NC. He was a democrat, like his father. But he could not win in his district--Martin Lancaster had it locked up. So Jones, Jr. switched parties and ran as a republican so he could get GOP money and win the seat.
His father is turning in his grave.

Perhaps this is what is happening in Ga.
