14. In my more cynical moments
I sometimes suspect that the neocons are deliberately putting a stranglehold on some US intelligence agencies (recent cuts in their funding, political purges) to help increase the probability of another major terrorist attack on US soil, since they figure the resulting anger could easily be manipulated and misdirected against Iran (even if the Iranians would have no relation to the attacks).

Terrorism on US soil is useful for the neocons since it inspires blind fear and anger, which they can twist against their bogeymen of choice-- e.g., Iraq. The US would never support a major attack against Iran today, in part since that would likely involve a military draft. But if there's another terrorist attack, look out: Iran becomes the root of all evil, the anchor of the Evil Axis in neocon propaganda, and fearful people-- like sheep-- would be convinced to support a draft and a strike against Iran. The neocons obviously don't have in mind the best interests of United States citizens (or of other countries, for that matter).
