First lady praises Bush's strength in dealing with disaster, war

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US First Lady Laura Bush praised President George W. Bush's strength in dealing with the war in Iraq and disasters like the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"He is doing great. He has big, broad shoulders," she told NBC television's "Today" show of her husband, adding: "There is a lot on the American people, too, and their response has been so terrific."

She also praised the fact that people in storm-ravaged Louisiana "are rebuilding their lives and other people want to help them."

The president likewise lauded the spirit of cooperation he and his wife witnessed on their visit to Louisiana, where they were helping with a Habitat for Humanity home-building project. "I am the kind of guy who gets inspired by the decency of others. As I travel the country and see this incredible spirit, it's so uplifting. It makes me understand how blessed we are to be in America," he said.
