Bill Clinton and Edwards have a history - so who knows. I can't help but think that there must have been some plan to unite the Democratic Party after the primary (b/c w/out Bush to run against, they will definitely need every vote they can get). By having your own VP "populist" candidate run you can help ensure your wife wins the primary (for example, by splitting the vote) and put them on the ticket at the end hoping to unite the party. That certainly would explain Edwards 180.
