... started with "public" pushback against media criticism of Reagan's loose relationship with the facts;

... then hit highway speeds with the nullification of the Fairness Doctrine;

... went pedal to the metal with the birth of the cable news networks and their growth during the first gulf war;

... and hit the afterburner when Bill Clinton signed the 1996 Telecom act into law.
