Chelsea was low-key yet poised, articulate and detailed, sounding more like she was giving a public policy seminar than a political speech. After a few opening words, she opened the floor to questions from the audience.

How would Hillary Clinton take care of veterans? It's one her mom's highest priorities. When people sign up for the military, "we sign up to serve them," she said, promising her mother would fully fund the Veterans Administration.

How would she handle welfare and the safety net? Hillary Clinton will push for more real unemployment insurance, Chelsea said. She'll also freeze home foreclosures for 90 days. Chelsea noted that President Bush announced a 30-day freeze this morning, but said her mom "doesn't think that's enough."

Asked about a childhood memory that shows her mom's character, Chelsea Clinton said that during her dad's presidential campaign, she and her mom were only apart for three nights. "She would always fly home" to be with me, she said. Even now that she's living on her own in New York City, when she gets sick, she still likes to go to her parents' home outside New York City. "She still makes me soup and applesauce," she said.

Clinton took 16 questions in all and was never at loss for an answer, most of which started with, "My mom ..."
