55. I'll say this as a Texan.
I'm a native Texan and I've lived here all my life.

Some parts of Texas are quite racist. East Texas is bad, and especially around the parts Northeast of Houston such as Liberty and Vidor and Jasper, site of the horrific James Byrd, Jr. dragging murder in 1998. East Texas up thru Dallas and towards Oklahoma is quite conservative and racist. The John Birch Society was thriving in Dallas in 1963. President Kennedy was warned not to go there because of the Birch Society opposition to the Civil Rights Act.

According to Wikipedia, despite the Beaumont-Port Arthur metro area being one-fourth African-American, in the 2000 census, Vidor had 11,440 residents and only eight African-Americans. In the 1990s, H.U.D. Secretary Henry Cisneros came to town and attempted to desegregate the projects. The white people refused to let African-Americans live in the projects, despite his orders.

I'm not surprised that non-college educated whites in Texas would have a problem with Obama. I have problems with him for other reasons. I have problems with Hillary as well, for reasons other than her gender.
