Hillary backer on Ed Schultz today: "I will work hard for John McCain."

She said she had been a registered Democrat for 40 years, but changed her registration to Republican this week with the intent to do all she could to elect McCain, now that (as she acknowledged) Obama is the presumptive nominee. Needless to say, she sounded bitter.

She attributed others' support of Obama to (quote) "white guilt" and the desire to live "the black experience."

She said a few unkind words about the Kennedys and Richardson, too, but Ed challenged her about backing McCain simply because she doesn't like Obama's "personality." (By "personality," I think we know he meant "color.")

OK, this was a racist caller, and certainly that doesn't motivate most Hillary supporters by any means. (You can find them on "Hillary is 44" and Hillaryclintonforum.net, but not here at DU.)

But that said, my gosh - I simply can't understand the depth of hatred that would trigger a Dem of 40 years to switch to the GOP, AND to promise to work as hard as she can to defeat the Dem nominee, even though his positions are far closer to Hillary's than McCain's. Parts of that attitude (not the racism) are sometimes on display here at DU, too, and I don't get it.

From either side, what gives?
