But let's take a look at this:

As per Webster, the definition of a Cult:

great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b: the object of such devotion c: a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion

So a cult can represent devotion to an idea, or to a movement.

I will argue that the "cult" accusation may be true according to the definition above, but hear this:

It is not the cult of a person - Obama.

It is devotion to an idea. The idea of democracy.

Imagine if all of America was a "Cult of democracy". We would be devoted to the idea that there must be many ideas, and that all must be heard.

Doesn't exactly sound like Kool-Aid time when you really look at it.
