DU has a couple of religious forums that might give some interesting responses to your excellent list of Biblical verses concerning the poor. I am sure that there are a good many there who are "Christians", but do not consider themselves to be hypocrites. Also, as much as it pains me to admit, I have known a good many fundamentalists with whom I disagree vehemently on many things, who nonetheless do help the poor. It would be convenient if we could paint all "Christians" whom we believe are hypocrites as some kind of monsters or simply despicable, but the truth is that a good many of them are good people (I am sure there are many here who would be willing to flame me for even suggesting that). Broad brushes usually get paint where it does not belong.
