It sounds as if you and I would enjoy vacations together. I always like to get the local flavor of things. Lots of small towns in the US have small charming coffee shops. I can't remember the name of the shop now, but there is an excellent one in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Their coffee is great and so is the atmosphere. But they didn't know what "tall" meant in coffee vernacular!

I used to work as a barista. You learn a lot about people by the coffee they drink and how they order it. My favorite story is about a FedEx worker who came in on a rainy morning and ordered a quadruple latte with whole milk! She was in a huge hurry. When we gave her the coffee, the shop owner said, "drive safely out there!" and she answered, "can't do it ma'am! FedEx". Beware the FedEx trucks with their quadruple-latte fuelled drivers!
