17. We locals are all laughing at how the media dubbed this fire the
"Topanga" fire. It is most certainly NOT in or anywhere near Topanga Canyon, or the community of Topanga. Both of those are south of the 101 freeway.

I think the name started because where the fire began was at the northern terminus of Topanga Canyon Blvd, in Chatsworth (NW corner of the San Fernando Valley). It has spread SW clear to the edge of Hidden Hills, Old Agoura, and Oak Park. It has not jumped the 101 freeway and is not expected to. Weather has cooled off and the Santa Ana winds quit blowing.

Other affected areas (this fire) are Box Canyon, Woolsey Canyon, Dayton Canyon, Bell Canyon, southern edge of Simi Valley. These are all suburban neighborhoods and not separate cities. The burn area is in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (National Park Service) land. Some of it is what used to be the Ahmanson Ranch, I think. The last time it burned through here was maybe 1978? Then the fire did jump the 101 and go all the way to the Pacific coast at Malibu. Fire control is better now.
