My web browser has been set to "Astronomy Picture a Day" as its home page for years. Each day there's a wonderful new discovery to make, with a photo and a link-stuffed explanatory paragraph. It's been a great comfort and reminder of all the beauty surrounding us all in a huge universe. When ugly things are happening on Planet Earth, I like to step back a bit. The APOD site is here:

Today's photo is especailly stunning. If you click on the photo at the APOD site, you'll get a much larger version that you can download for a high-quality print or screen saver. To me this image looks like a gigantic glowing version of the old "mystic rose" symbols.


The other day they had a 360 degree vista photo from the top of Mount Everest, and the paragraph explained that the name of the mountain in the local language of Nepal is "Sagarmatha," which means "Forehead of the Sky." The photo is amazing - you can pan to the right and go right around the 360 degree view like you're there with the photographer.
