Jonathan Wand did a rebuttal, which apparently demonstrated that the differences wash out when one controls for other variables -- but the link is broken, and I never read it. I think one would find inter alia that the towns with hand-counted paper ballots -- especially the ones with the most Democrats -- are disproportionately along the Vermont border, where one might expect Dean to have an advantage over Kerry.
