I read up on this about 12 years ago. It really spun my head around. I then got a book by Umberto Eco called "Foucault's Pendulum." If the stuff gets too heavy, I strongly recommend the book.

The Europeans live for this stuff. They put our Kennedy assassination buffs to shame with their devotion. It obscures the really interesting tangent to this story, which is the Gnostic Gospels, discovered at Nag Hammadi in 1948. The church fathers didn't do quite the job they thought they had 2000 or so years ago and these wonderful documents survive.

Here is an interesting passage:

2 Jesus said, "Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all. "
