Capistrano School Teachers On Strike Over Pay Cut [View All]

Hundreds of teachers are on strike in Orange County's second-largest school district in a long-running dispute over pay cuts.

Teachers and some students began picketing Thursday morning outside some schools in San Juan Capistrano.

The Capistrano Unified School District says all 56 campuses in south Orange County remain open with substitute teachers, but the school day will be shorter.

Striking teachers are being docked a day's pay. It was not clear how many would participate in the teacher strike, the county's first in a decade.

Teachers in the 52,000-student district are angry because the school board imposed a 10.1-percent pay cut in March after nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations.

No new talks are scheduled with the 2,300-member teachers union.
