An ad touting the gay-inclusive policy of the 1.3 million-member United Church of Christ has been refused by at least 17 broadcast and cable outlets, including the Big Four TV networks and the gay-themed cable channel Logo.

The denomination's 30-second "ejector" commercial begins with a shot of an African-American mother in a church pew, trying to calm a fussing baby. As fellow worshippers become more impatient with the baby, someone in the wings pushes an ejector button, sending mother and baby flying from the pew.

A gay couple, an Arab American, a person using a walker and others get ejected as well. The humorous spot suggests that the United Church of Christ welcomes people who may not find a friendly reception at other churches, a theme underscored by the announcer, who says, "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here."

Logo, which is owned by Viacom and operated by MTV, rejected the ad, saying that MTV's policy of standards and practices "does not accept advocacy or religious advertising that appears to disparage any organization, denomination or individual." The policy applies to all MTV Networks' channels, which include MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Logo and Nickelodeon, the company said in a written statement.
